Vernon and Gerardo discuss how LEAF promotes human and economic development by providing financing and development assistance to cooperatives and social purpose ventures that create and save jobs for low-income people. Gerardo also discusses the importance of working as a CDFI that provides support to organizations that have a social impact on communities. Gerardo has served as Executive Director of LEAF for the last five years, spearheading the Fund's move into retail food co-ops and healthy food financing. He joined LEAF after spending many years in the commercial banking and investment management field. His background includes ten years as a Vice President at First National Bank of Chicago, and 15 years in investment management in the positions of Portfolio Manager and Senior Vice President with Baring Asset Management and John Hancock funds. In 2015, Gerardo joined the board of the Food Co-op Initiative, a non-profit organization whose mission is to increase the number of new food cooperatives delivering access to healthy food in diverse communities across this country. He has a master's degree in Economics from Stanford University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Vernon Oakes is President of Oakes Management Inc. As President, he has renovated and managed his own properties, and those owned by other entities since 1985. Mr. Oakes is the immediate Past President of the National Association of Housing Cooperatives, and serves on several boards to advance the interests of cooperatives. He is also a former coordinator of the MBA program at Howard University, and an MBA graduate of Stanford University, who has used his business acumen to benefit the community by providing quality housing for all populations. Vernon is a consummate advocate for cooperatives.
